Lisandro Martinez is seen by Arsenal’s rivals as more than just a center-back. News

Manchester United’s goal, Lisandro Martinez, could have been used in a different position to what he is used to, had he chosen not to join the Premiership team.

Understandably, Arsenal are also fighting for a player and that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta sees him as a useful player on the team and not just as a center-back which is his regular position.

The Ajax defender, who has played for four seasons under United’s new boss Erik ten Haga against the champions of the Netherlands, usually plays in the center of the defense.

But according to The Mirror, Arsenal would see Martinez as a more flexible type of addition to their roster.

The Argentina international has extensive experience in playing both left-back and midfield.

But it seems certain United would have used him in his more natural central defensive role had he moved to Manchester this summer.

The 24-year-old has been a key figure for the champions of the Netherlands in the last 3 seasons, having appeared 120 times.

And with United conceding a record number of goals last season, Argentina may be the perfect candidate to bolster their leaky defense, not least with captain Harry Maguire who has struggled with his form all past season.

Doubts remain, however, about Ajax’s Player of the Year, standing 5’9 inches taller than most Premier League defenders and strikers.

However, if used to defend three or four defenders, Ten Hag will learn Martinez’s best attributes from his time together in Amsterdam.

As Arsenal have already made two important transfers, a landing by his former player would have secured a positive start to Ten The Hague transfer deals to Old Trafford.

And with seven international appearances already, Martinez looks bright for a future wherever that may be.
